Failure; Cats - 29 August

Well that whole I'm a morning person now thing didn't work.

I was tired yesterday and didn't achieve much. Today I rose later than usual and didn't achieve much. Admittedly that was due to struggling with network issues. It would seem to be a simple desire to use ones home internet connection from ones work laptop without too much reconfiguring and general foostering about. But no. Zone Alarm is not compatible with Windows Internet Connection Sharing folks (ah-hah!). At least the free one isn't. That one fact cost me a couple ofhours.

I also struggled with my setup for my Audible stuff. I couldn't download stuff at work because of the firewall (I think) and the install program froze my home machine. Solid. I think that was some sort of DirectX incompatibilty problem (there's a little movie embedded in the install program) as upgrading DirectX and stopping the movie seemed to clear that up.

So I have purchased two audio books. The Big Sleep and Life of Pi. But of course they're sitting on the Audible site as I haven't downloaded them yet.

Computers should be a little easier to deal with. I work with the god-damned things and they still frustrate me.

A friend came to visit. He brought a damaged kitten. Last night on his way home from work (1am-ish, he's a waiter), he kept hearing what sounded like a cat. He stopped a couple of times and looked in his car but couldn't trace the source and eventually thought that either he was hearing things or that there was something gone squeaky with the engine/brakes/fan belt/whatever.  Looking under the bonnet didn't help as it was dark and he couldn't see anything.

This morning when he awoke there were pitiful sounds coming from his car and with the aid of daylight he discovered that there was a cat, hiding in behind the engine. It took a lot of coaxing to get it out as he couldn't reach it. Eventually he managed to extricate the poor beastie and discovered that its paw was damaged. We tried to feed it (unsuccessfully) and then Sally and he took it to the vet.

Sadly there was nothing the vet could do and the little tiny thing was put down.

I have no real affection for cats but this is sad.

I'm now going to join my family watching ET. I've never seen it. I expect to cry.
