Stenographer - 4 November
I need some sort of personal stenographer. As I drive to and from work, I think of things to talk about here but by the time I sit down at the keyboard, they've gone. Vanished in a puff of brain cells. Sally went for her 20 week scan last week and all's well. She asked the sex of the baby and now we know. I was ambivalent about that and I kinda feel like I know what I'm getting for christmas. It's all very practical as we now have an accurate pronoun we can use with Paddy and there won't be any confusion later. It's a girl by the way. So now we're looking for names. Feh. Someone in work had baby just the other day and an email went 'round giving sex, name and weight. The weight thing always puzzled me as I don't really know why this is one of the details that everyone expects to know about a baby. There are obvious reasons why in that it's an indication of how healthy the child is, and I guess the ow factor for big babies is there too. But it's odd, if you think about it and just one of those things that's become the norm. I met an online acquaintance on Friday, and it was a pleasure. If work hadn't been kicking me in the ass, I'd've been tour guide on Saturday, but I had to work all weekend. I'm making training videos. For internal consumption only, so they're not terribly professional or interesting. Just me being a talking head interspersed with Powerpoint Slides (as I type that I'm reminded that David Byrne likes Powerpoint). I'd show you a sample, but then I'd end up being like the Star Wars Kid. Hey! Maybe I'd get some cool stuff from sarky bloggers! Anyway, it's very frustrating as it's hard to get the timing right with the visuals and the software -- you read an suitcase type thing and have timed effects. We cut the presentations up into four minute chunks but it's very easy to flub your lines 3:45 into the thing and have to start again. That or the sun goes in and the light changes and the green screen software can't cope with the difference. I have to get this done by the end of the week. I think I will, but it'll be tight. |
